Limewash vs Roman Clay vs Venetian Plaster
Which Specialty Finish Fits Your Room?
Limewash, Roman clay and Venetian plaster are all hand-applied, mineral-based wall finishes — and every one of them looks completely different from a roller-painted wall. They're also different from each other: limewash is brushed and cloudy, Roman clay is troweled and matte, Venetian plaster is burnished to a stone-like polish. Here's how they compare, room by room.
| Limewash | Roman Clay | Venetian Plaster | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Soft, cloud-like tonal movement; a matte finish that shifts subtly as the light changes | Smooth, matte texture with organic, stone-like movement — hand-troweled and one of a kind | The depth of polished stone, built up in burnished layers |
| Sheen | Velvety matte throughout | Smooth matte, with a soft stone-like sheen where it's burnished | Satin to a high mirror polish, depending on how far it's burnished |
| Application | Several brushed coats, built up by hand in overlapping passes | Thin troweled layers over a primed wall, then burnished | Multiple burnished layers — each layer sets before the next; a feature wall typically takes 2–4 days |
| Where it goes | Interior walls, and also exterior brick & stucco (see our exterior limewash page) | Interior walls only | Interior walls only |
| Arizona-sun durability | Exterior limewash is a breathable mineral finish that works with the wall instead of sealing it shut — it breathes with the wall and develops a soft patina over time in the Arizona sun | Not exposed to direct sun — this is an interior finish, sealed for the room it's in | Not exposed to direct sun — this is an interior finish; burnished lime plaster is naturally water-resistant and we add a wax or sealer in splash zones |
| Upkeep | Small areas can often be freshened up without repainting the whole surface | Sealed surfaces handle humidity and wiping well — the right sealer matters most in a bathroom | Naturally durable; a wax or sealer keeps splash zones easy to wipe down |
| Best rooms | Living & bedroom accent walls, fireplaces, whole-room interiors, ceilings & stairwells, powder rooms | Feature & fireplace walls, primary bedrooms, powder rooms & bathrooms, media rooms, range hoods | Kitchen range hoods, feature & fireplace walls, powder rooms & primary baths, entryways & stair halls |
| Cost | Every project is priced on room size, surface condition and prep, so we don't publish per-square-foot numbers — get a free written estimate for your space. | ||

Common Questions
Can I mix these finishes in one home?
Yes — many Phoenix homes combine finishes room to room, for example limewash through the main living areas with a Roman clay or Venetian plaster fireplace wall as a feature. We bring samples of more than one finish to your free estimate so you can compare them on your own wall before deciding.
Which finish is easiest to live with day to day?
All three are low-maintenance once sealed for the room they're in. Limewash small-area touch-ups are the simplest since it's a brushed mineral wash; Roman clay and Venetian plaster in wet rooms depend on the sealer holding up, so ask us how often to re-wax or reseal your specific room.
Do you install all three finishes yourselves?
Yes — our crew hand-applies limewash, Roman clay and Venetian plaster (along with microcement, tadelakt and Crystal Brush). See each finish's own page for photos and more detail, or tell us your room and budget and we'll recommend one at your free estimate.
